Academics

St. Bruno School offers a rigorous academic curriculum within a caring Catholic community and school environment. We follow the core curriculum established by the Archdiocese of Chicago, which is aligned with the state and national learning standards. St. Bruno School is certified by the State of Illinois. All teachers are also certified and hold a Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degrees. St. Bruno teachers exemplify Christian values and demonstrate their commitment to their students and respect for the dignity for all.

Our instructional program includes grades Pre-K through grade 8. Each grade level incorporates content and activities that are developmentally appropriate and are aligned with the New Illinois Learning Standards incorporating the Common Core.  Academic subjects include Religion, Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science, Technology, Physical Education, Art and Music.

We have recently partnered with The Museum of Science and Industry in establishing a strong STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Program.

Faith Based Education

St. Bruno School works to pass on the teaching of Jesus to the children, to form them in gospel values, and to help them transform these values into daily living. Instruction in religious truth and values is an important part of the school program. It is not one more subject alongside the rest, but instead it is the underlying reality in which students’ experiences of learning and living achieve their coherence and deepest meaning.

Special liturgical programs occur throughout the year, including Living Stations of the Cross during Lent, Crowning of the Blessed Mother Mary in May, and the Christmas Pageant in December. All school liturgies are celebrated throughout the school year with grade levels taking part in the planning and ministering of these masses. Each grade level also takes part in a family mass on an assigned given Sunday.

Early Childhood

The goal of the early childhood program is to develop children eager to learn by nurturing their curiosity, engaging them in hands on activities, developing their social skills and promoting respect for themselves and others.

The St. Bruno Preschool curriculum is theme-centered. The centers in the classroom are prepared with interactive materials to support exploration of the theme’s ideas and concepts. Math, science, social studies and reading readiness skills will be advanced as well as religion, art, music and physical activity.

Elementary

Throughout the elementary experience, St. Bruno provides a rich, faith-centered education for all children.  We employ cross curricular techniques, thematically connecting lessons from subject to subject. While strong academic performance is emphasized, equally valued is the spiritual, social, physical and moral development of each child.

At the primary level (K-3rd grade), St. Bruno students continue to develop a solid foundation of cognitive skills and spiritual integrity. With an emphasis on Language Arts, Reading and Phonics, Writing, and Math, our primary teachers strive to strengthen those core skills that will best prepare our students for the intermediate grade levels.

During the intermediate years (4th-5th grades) at St. Bruno, students continue to build and strengthen basic skill sets. Additionally, students are exposed to higher level writing exercises and problem solving skills at this time. Students begin to see connections between lessons in class and real world applications.

Specials

Technology

Students receive weekly instruction in our fully networked computer lab. Our students are encouraged to use the lab for research purposes. We currently have two Promethean Activboards that are used to compliment daily instruction.

Art

While supporting the regular classroom content, the art program provides students with the opportunity to creatively explore a variety of media. Community outreach endeavors include poster contests and more.

Language

With the help of Language Stars, the 2nd-7th grade classes are learning the Mandarin Chinese language through the foreign language program. There is an instructor that comes in weekly to give classes

Library

Our students do much more than just check books in and out of the library. They learn the tools to use the library as a means of resource, reference, and interest.

Physical Education

The weekly physical education program involves students in a wide range of activities and encourages a life-long commitment to physical activity. Students focus on working together as a team and learn the importance of healthy living.

Music

St. Bruno is in the midst of a musical renaissance! The Pre-K -2nd students sing echo songs revolving around the Christian holidays of Christmas & Easter and also Valentines Day, Thanksgiving, Halloween, etc. In addition to singing, they play rhythm instruments and circle games. 3rd-6th grade students learn music for Mass (hymns and acclamation) to enable them to participate in sung prayer. 4th-6th grade students are learning to play recorder, which also introduces them to written music notation. All students have an opportunity to perform for other students by singing at Mass or at other performances. In 2012 we had a recorder assembly and a special production of the Three-Piggy Opera starring the 3rd grade. For the upcoming school year, we will expand our musical offerings adding Chorus to the schedule, after-school piano lessons (private 1-on-1 instruction), and a music and movement club for PreK students.

Testing

Aspire Test

3rd through 8th Grade

St. Bruno administers the Aspire® test to all students from third grade to seventh grade. This test allows teachers to evaluate each student’s knowledge and application skills in the core academic subject areas of reading, language, mathematics, science and social studies.

The Aspire® program is designed to help eighth and ninth graders explore a broad range of options for their future. It prepares students not only for their high school coursework, but for their post–high school choices as well.

Test results are made available to parents in mid to late May.
